Upon commencement of organizational operations, Agyemang Sarpong Foundation administrators will travel to Ghana to promote the availability of our program in the country’s poorest regions. Our representatives will collect applications for participation from individuals interested in committing to long-term training in the fishing industry. Applicants will then undergo a personal interview process, in an effort to select the applicants who display the highest degree of dedication to improving their education and earning potential. Additionally, organizational representatives will advertise our efforts through word of mouth, our organization’s website, and, most importantly, through the successful implementation of our mission and the important impact of our results that follow.
Candidates who have been selected for participation must commit to at least one year of hands-on training with our organization. Their role will be similar to a paid apprentice, with each apprentice being provided a small stipend to assist with their family’s expenses while they are on board receiving vocational education.
Education is initially provided while the ship is in port, allowing our students to achieve comfort with onboard operation and safety prior to beginning training at sea. During their period of training, students will receive a comprehensive education in a variety of areas related to working aboard a commercial fishing vessel, including:
- Onboard emergency drills, designed to meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements for commercial fishermen
- Commercial fishing vessel stability and damage control
- Engine Repair
- First aid
- Long line fishing equipment and methods
- Outdoor survival
Upon completion of an apprenticeship with our organization, individuals will be fully qualified to retain and maintain meaningful employment within the commercial longline fishing industry. The overall goal of implementation of our outreach philosophy and organizational mission in this community is to strengthen the lives of individuals and families from the foundation of their lives. We believe that attaining meaningful and sustainable employment will lead to future success for our target population.
